I distrust NHS statistics because:

• I distrust statistics generally
• they often don’t measure what they purport to measure
• there is every reason to suppose they are manipulated

But if you can’t trust the statistics what do you go on?

Well I go on what I see and what my friends see.  There really is no substitute for anecdotal evidence.
