My objection to “sprawl” is that it’s not objective and it’s not neutral.  The phenomenon it describes (geographers might have a better term) is urban expansion.  “Sprawl” is the emotional term - investing the idea of urban expansion with the idea that it is bad.  It might well be bad but it’s a debate you have to have.  You have to prove it.  By using the word “sprawl” you are curtailing debate.  That is bad.  That is always bad.
